When someone dies leaving assets over a certain amount, the
organisations holding those assets will need proof that they
can be released to anyone else.

A Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration (if there is no Will) is required to carry out the
administration and distribution of the estate to the beneficiaries.
You can either choose to apply for the Grant yourself, or use a

because they have the right experience, or because the estate that they
are dealing with is very simple.

Before you start the administration process yourself, there are many
factors to take into account, such as whether you have the time to gather
and process all of the required information and forms and how much
money you may save yourself in professional fees. It is also important
to bear in mind that whoever deals with the estate could be legally and
financially liable for any mistakes or oversights.
